SBI PO Exam Over: What is next?

Finally SBI PO exam is over for all the candidates. Given the level of competition, exhaustion, fatigue and tiredness is always a side effect of such a big exam.

Relax and get over with the sleep:

First of all, you have worked hard for last so many months and spent sleepless nights, it is time to relax your

body and mind. You should take a break for a day or two and get away to a different environment (you can visit your friends, relatives or simply go out on a trip with friends). You need to refresh yourself and get over with the exam fatigue before you start on the next task.

Start preparing for the interview:

If you are confident that you have done fairly well in the exam, you should start working on Group Discussion and Interview Preparation. We have published many articles on Bankers Adda for this, you can refer to
Interview Prep section for the same. An early start will give you a big advantage vis-a-vis those who will start the preparation after the written test results are out.

Start Preparing for IBPS PO:

In any case, start preparing for IBPS PO. IBPS has already announced that IBPS PO exam will be in conducted in October (notification should be out by the end of this month), so it is right time to start the preparations. You need to understand that you should not be solely dependent on SBI PO. Reason is simple - there are only 1837 seats in SBI PO. SBI will give interview call to approx three times the number of seats. Also, SBI has very rigorous Group Discussion and Interview Process. So, you never know, where you might lose out in the race.

Remember - It is not over till you win and your fight should continue till get actually join a government job. There is no scope for any stoppages in between.

Wish you all the best!

Top 10 Banking Job Interview Questions

1. Why investment banking? Why do you want to work at our bank?
In your response, highlight that investment banking is a very competitive and lucrative area, offering tremendous growth opportunities. Talk about the latest industry trends and how they impact businesses in the bank’s specialty. Talk about the opportunities presented recent mergers and acquisitions and the challenges due to by the sub prime crisis. Has Lehman Brothers responded appropriately? What are your thoughts on JPMorgan and Bear Stearns? Be prepared to discuss the firms on the front page of today’s Wall Street Journal.
You need to convince the interviewer that you have the necessary drive, capabilities, and personality best suited to become a successful investment banker. Gaining the trust and respect of the recruiters is very important for cracking these interviews. Talk about the company’s position in the industry and how it differs from that of other Wall Street listed firms – both bulge bracket and boutique.

2. What value is our stock trading at? Trading volume compared to bulge bracket firms.
Before going for an investment banking interview, go through the financial profiles of the bulge bracket firms and identify the highlights. Be aware of the rankings of the investment banking firms in various segments, such as advisory services or asset management. Stock movements are often a reaction to the latest happenings and have less to do with the company’s fundamentals. Study the recent stock price movements and be ready to answer questions related to a sharp movement in the share price or jumps in trading volume.

3. Walk me through the high points and low points in your resume. What were your greatest accomplishments and challenges?
Communication, leadership, problem solving, and working under pressure are the key skills in an investment banking job. You should highlight that you are flexible enough to adopt new styles and methods of functioning, while being willing to work as part of a bigger team.
Talk about your core competencies and how you used them to achieve measurable results at a previous job or during your education. Discuss your failures, how you handled the situations, and what you took away from them. Whenever possible, talk about deals you’ve participated in. There are few things than interest an Associate or Senior Vice President more than deals.

4. Describe some risks you’ve taken. How did you make the decisions?
An investment banker’s job often involves tough decisions, keeping in mind the political changes, various macroeconomic variables and the market trends. The ability to take risks is important. You need to demonstrate adequate analytical skills and how they were used in managing risk associated with a particular deal. You should highlight the logical assumptions and calculated guesses made by you while undertaking a risky project or decision. In an investment banking career, it is often more about being “roughly right” than “precisely inaccurate.”

5. Describe an ethical decision you had to make.
Ethics, trust and integrity are often challenged in an investment banking job. Look at the sub prime crisis, the near collapse of the mortgage giant, Fannie Mae, and the restatement of financial accounts of several investment banking firms in recent years. It is often unethical (or even unlawful) practices that are the main contributors to situations like these. Discuss an instance when you had to make an ethical decision – what did you take into consideration? How did you finally come to a decision? These are insights into how you work and what the firm can expect from you in tough situations.

6. Why should we hire you?
Be ready for this one. Be confident but not cocky. Highlight that you are the right candidate because you can hit the ground running and are flexible enough to move with the changing environment. The core competencies essential to an investment banking career are: problem solving ability, professional attitude with willingness to adapt and remain flexible, leadership and communication abilities, resourcefulness and the drive to succeed.

7. When you are not working, what do you do?
Investment banking jobs involve long hours and a lot of hard work – there are simply no two ways about it. That does not mean that firms want to hire people without a personality and other interests outside of work. Highlight activities you enjoy that demonstrate risk taking, recharging and an outgoing personality. Let you personal life reflect what investment banking firms are looking for.

8. How much do you read? What do you read?
The types of books and magazines you read reflect your personality and highlight your passion for the industry and the finer things in life (why else take an investment banking job?).The Wall Street Journal and your industry specific trade magazines must be on your list. Also include other readings that show you are not one dimensional in your interests.

9. Do you learn more from success or failure?
Your attitude toward both success and failure could be the difference in determining whether or not you get an investment banking job offer. Deals flop, it’s part of the investment banking game. Discussing how you do a quick post mortem and lessons learned discussion, then move on to the next deal is the best approach. Learning from but not dwelling on the past is the key.

10. What is the difference between Nationalized bank and Private Bank ?
A Nationalized bank is one that is owned by the government of the country. Since the people decide who the government is, they are also referred to as public sector banks. The government is responsible for the money deposited into the accounts of these banks. Where as a private sector bank is one that is owned by an independent individual or a company that is controlled by a few individuals. In short, the bank is owned by someone else and they run the bank. The person owning/running the bank is responsible for the money deposited into the accounts of these banks.

Last Minute Tips for SBI PO (Exam Strategy)

State Bank of India (SBI) is the largest public sector bank of India and a Probationary Officer (PO) profile in SBI is considered to be most coveted job among all PSU Banks. Recently, in the months of April 2014, SBI had invited applications against 1837 vacancies  for the post of Probationary Officers. As per our estimates nearly 20 Lac candidates applied for these coveted 1837 vacancies, which is approx 0.1 % of the total vacancies (this translates to selection of 1 candidate out of 1,000). Hence competition is going to be tough and it will not be easy for a candidate to sail through.

Recruitment process will have two phases - Phase I (Written Test) and Phase II (Group Discussion and Interview).

Phase I: Written test will consist of a online objective exam and a descriptive test. The online objective test will having following 4 sections, each section of 50 marks (total 200 Marks) -

a) Test of English Language (Grammar, Vocabulary, Comprehension etc.)
b) Test of General Awareness, Marketing & Computers
c) Test of Data Analysis & Interpretation
d) Test of Reasoning (High Level)

The Descriptive Test with 1 hour duration (50 Marks) will be of “Test Descriptive Test: of English Language (comprehension, short précis, letter writing & essay)”.

Descriptive Test paper will  evaluated for only those candidates who have scored qualifying marks in the Objective Tests and are Placed adequately high as per total marks in objective test.

Keeping in mind the tough competition, candidates should ensure that they go to the exam hall with full preparation and should avoid the slightest mistake in the exam. Essentially, candidates should keep in mind the following, while attempting the exam -

1. Go with a Plan:
Candidates should go with proper plan - as in which section to attempt first and which section to attempt last and how much time should one devote on each section. It is very important that candidate stick to their plan (time wise) i.e. if you had decided that you will give 40 minutes to Reasoning
section, you should stick to it. Reason for the same is - sometimes a particular section may be very difficult, and while attempting the same you may get carried away by devoting more time on that, it will mean that you will compromise on some other section as you will have lesser time for it. You need to remember that there is a sectional cut-off in the exam and if a particular section is tough, it will be tough for everyone and hence cut-off for that section will be low.

2. Attempt Paper in 2 rounds:
You should attempt the question paper in two rounds. While attempting each section - first do the questions, for which you are sure and which can be done in less than a minute. Leave tougher questions for the second round. This way, you will not miss any easy question in the paper and will be able to optimize the score.

3. Be careful about sectional cut-off:
In SBI PO, you have to score a minimum qualifying marks in each section and qualify overall score also. So, be careful that you do not miss on a section and try to maintain a balance across all sections.

4. Be careful about negative marking:
Each correct answer will fetch you 1 mark, while each wrong answer will attract penalty of ¼ marks. There is no negative marking for unattempted questions. So, if you are not sure about a question, it is better to leave that question rather than attempting it wrong.

5. Start with easier section:
Suppose, you are more comfortable in a particular section, attempt it first. It will give you the confidence and set the pace for the exam. Attempt most difficult part in the end.

6. Do not get stuck on a question:
Never get touchy about any question and hence do not waste time if you are not able to crack it within 1-2 mins. We have seen, many candidates get stuck with questions like seating arrangement/puzzles in reasoning part and waste precious time on these. Never do that. If you feel that you might get stuck, leave it for second round.

7. Go prepared for the descriptive exam:
Remember, in SBI PO exam, you will have a descriptive paper of 50 marks, for which, you will be allotted 1 hour after the online exam. This is very important, as you need to qualify in this descriptive exam also, to sail through to the next phase of the selection process.

8. Never give up during exam:
Competitions like this are the tests of your nerves. You should go with a positive frame of mind to the exam hall and maintain the same throughout the exam. Many times, when candidates get stuck or find a particular section difficult, they give up. Never ever give up. Paper is not going to be easy for anyone and winner will be one who will hold the nerves till the end.
9. Practice Online Tests: Since this is the first time, SBI PO will be online, it is very important for you to be familiar with the online testing environment. You should join Online Practice tests from a reputed coaching and do regular practice. This will make you comfortable with the online testing platform and also help you prepare your strategy for the exam.

10. Take Proper Sleep Before Exam: Candidates should take a proper sleep before the exam day and should have light breakfast before the exam.

How Can I Succeed?

How Can I Succeed?

Once a person asked Socrates, an ancient Greek philosopher, what is the the secret of Success. Socrates thought for a moment and then told the young man to meet him near the river the next morning.

The met next morning. Socrates told the young man to walk with him inside the river.

When the water got up to their necks, Socrates took the young man by surprise and ducked him into the water. The man struggled to get out but Socrates was strong and kept him under water until he started turning blue.

The young man struggled hard and finally managed to get up. The first thing he did was to gasp and take a deep breath.

Socrates asked, “What did you want the most when you were under the water?”

The man replied “Air”.

Socrates said: “That’s the most secret to success. When you want success as badly as you want air, you will get it. There is no other secret”.

Moral of the story:

A burning desire is the starting point of all accomplishments. Just like a small fire cannot give much heat, a weak desire cannot produce great results.

So friends, exams are approaching fast and you should be devoted to your preparation with complete focus on exams. Success will surely come to you. All the best!
